About Slipper Chapel
Slipper Chapel is a Roman Catholic chapel at Houghton Saint Giles, roughly a mile from Walsingham in Norfolk. Now a Grade I listed building, it belongs to the Catholic National Shrine and Basilica dedicated to Our Lady of Walsingham. It holds the revered Marian statue associated with Walsingham and continues to receive pilgrims.
Dating from about 1340, the church was first dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria and marked the final chapel encountered before pilgrims reached Walsingham Priory. Following the Reformation, religious services ended, and the building was variously used to house poor people, cattle and farm goods, as well as serving as a smithy. Charlotte Pearson Boyd recognised its origins, bought it in 1896, oversaw its repair and presented it to Downside Abbey. Architect Thomas Garner supervised another restoration in 1904. Public Mass returned in 1934, when the statue arrived from King’s Lynn, and it was formally crowned on behalf of Pope Pius XII in 1954.
