Saint Nicholas is an active Church of England parish church on Church Street, near the marketplace in North Walsham. One of the country’s larger parish churches, it is protected as a Grade I listed building. Its partially ruined tower, now about 85 feet high, remains a distinctive feature of the town.
Construction began around 1330, incorporating remnants of an earlier church. Plague outbreaks halted work in 1348 and 1361, while further disruption followed the events of 1381. Henry le Despenser, Bishop of Norwich, consecrated the completed building late in the fourteenth century. The tower collapsed in 1724 and suffered additional storm damage in 1836; it was never rebuilt. Inside are a telescopic font cover and surviving sections of a painted screen depicting saints. The elaborately carved porch includes coloured figures and heraldic decoration, while the east window contains stained glass installed during the 1920s as a war memorial.
