About St Mary's Church, Barton Bendish
St Mary’s Church, Barton Bendish stands apart from the village, on its western side near King’s Lynn in Norfolk. This medieval Anglican church is no longer used for regular worship and is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. It has Grade I listed protection. Barton Bendish historically supported three churches, but All Saints was demolished in the eighteenth century.
Although pottery indicates Saxon-period occupation close by, the existing building chiefly belongs to the fourteenth century. Its chancel was constructed around 1340, with the nave following roughly thirty years afterwards. The tower, probably completed by 1421, fell in 1710 and severely damaged the nave. Repairs undertaken in 1788 and 1789 included rebuilding the western end and installing a Norman entrance rescued from All Saints. Other significant details include the east window in Decorated Gothic style and a carved head of a woman above the doorway that once opened into the northern vestry.
