About St Andrew’s Church, Barton Bendish
St Andrew’s Church, Barton Bendish is a Church of England parish church near King’s Lynn in Norfolk. It honours the apostle Andrew and forms part of the Diocese of Ely. Still open for worship, it is now the parish’s only functioning church and is protected as a Grade I listed building.
Although archaeological work in 1981 identified late Saxon remains below the floors and surrounding burial ground, the existing nave originated in the early 1200s. The chancel was built in the following century, with the western tower and southern porch dating from the 1400s. Its walls combine flint with carrstone masonry, while dressed stone defines structural and decorative elements. Cross motifs associated with Andrew ornament both tower and porch. During repairs in 1844, workers uncovered a piscina and sculptural recess hidden beneath plaster. Renovations in 1868 introduced slate roofing and replaced the timberwork above. Interior furnishings include an unadorned eight-sided font and richly carved northern benches bearing the date 1623.
