About Church of St Margaret

The Church of St Margaret is a Church of England parish church in King’s Lynn, Norfolk. It is protected as a Grade I listed building, the highest designation for historic buildings in England.

The church probably dates from the 11th century, although its precise origins remain debated between the late Anglo-Saxon and early Norman periods. Its round tower is among 129 surviving examples in Norfolk, while later medieval alterations created contrasting arcades with circular 13th-century columns to the north and octagonal 14th-century columns to the south. Inside are a large stone font and a 1458 rood screen whose painted figures were damaged during the Reformation. An ornate hexagonal pulpit given in 1450 depicts its donors alongside several early Christian figures. The east window, installed during the late 1920s, shows the two saints Margaret, of Antioch and of Scotland.
