About Church of St Andrew
The Church of St Andrew is in South Runcton, within the King’s Lynn area of Norfolk. A Church of England building with Grade II* protection, it is no longer used for regular worship. Following its declaration as redundant and unsuccessful efforts to secure another purpose, the Friends of Friendless Churches assumed responsibility for it in 2023. In 2025 it was closed for extensive repairs planned in consultation with Historic England.
Its beginnings lie in the first decades of the 12th century, but only a section of the medieval chancel arch survives. John Sell Cotman depicted the building as a ruin in 1812. John Brown, architect to the Diocese of Norwich and surveyor of Norwich Cathedral, carried out an almost total reconstruction during 1838 and 1839. The Romanesque Revival design includes a nave, porch, chancel and bellcote. Cement rendering covers the brick structure, which has slate roofing, while the simply finished interior is whitewashed.
