About St Martin at Tours' Church, Houghton
St Martin at Tours' Church in Houghton, Norfolk, serves as an active Anglican parish church in the Diocese of Norwich. Dating from the fourteenth century, it stands amid the parkland of Houghton Hall and has Grade I protection. Services are held during the summer opening season of the estate.
Much of the medieval structure remains, but Sir Robert Walpole reshaped the church as part of his eighteenth-century changes to Houghton. His work included building the tower at the west end and renewing numerous windows and internal elements. The clerestory and classically styled cornice are also thought to come from this period. Local flint forms the main fabric, complemented by carrstone detailing. Burials include Walpole, close relatives and three later holders of the Orford earldom. A churchyard memorial recalls six Lancaster crewmen, one British and five Australian, killed in a nearby aircraft crash in 1944.
