About St Gregory's Church, Heckingham
St Gregory’s Church, Heckingham is a redundant Church of England church in the Norfolk village of Heckingham. Set on low rising ground above the River Chet, it is a Grade I listed building and is maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust.
Founded in the 12th century, with a recorded build date of 1150, the church retains substantial work from the 12th and 13th centuries. It is built mainly of flint, complemented by limestone details and areas of red brick, beneath thatched roofs. The west tower has a circular Norman base and a later octagonal upper section. A 15th-century south porch leads to an elaborate Norman doorway decorated with geometric carvings. Inside are a three-bay arcade, medieval paving and memorial slabs, a likely 12th-century font, and a small brass memorial from 1407. The east window contains stained glass installed in 1910 showing the Annunciation.
