About St Nicholas' Church
St Nicholas' Church is a medieval Church of England church in Gayton, Norfolk. Dating from around 1350, it has held Grade I listed status since 1960. The church belongs to the Gayton, Grimston and Great Massingham benefice. It is open each day, although regular services are not currently held there.
Constructed from flint set in lime mortar, the church retains a 14th-century font. Its tower has a distinctive domed top that can be seen from several approaches to Gayton. At its corners are symbols associated with the four evangelists: a winged man, lion, ox and eagle. The reredos was carved by a Belgian refugee during the First World War, using oak grown at Gayton Hall. Other features include Britt Wikstrom’s modern sculpture of Jacob wrestling an angel and a memorial to Captain Douglas H. Marsham, who died during the Siege of Mafeking. Modern seating replaced woodworm-damaged 19th-century benches in 2023.
