About St Mary's Church, Fordham
St Mary’s Church, Fordham, stands near Downham Market in Norfolk. Formerly an Anglican parish church, it ceased regular use in 1991 and has been cared for by the Friends of Friendless Churches since 2011. It is protected as a Grade II* listed building.
Dating largely from the 13th century, the church was altered during the mid-14th century and again around 1730, when its tower and south aisle were removed. Built from locally sourced carstone, it now has a straightforward nave-and-chancel layout, with slate covering the nave and tiles over the chancel. A bell-cot sits on the western gable. The blocked south arcade contains two traceried windows, while further windows include Y-tracery in the chancel. Surviving furnishings are limited, but include a decorated coffin lid, part of a damaged medieval pew, and later pieces designed by Randell Feilden.
