About Church of St Mary
The Church of St Mary in Bircham, Norfolk, is a Church of England parish church within the Diocese of Norwich. It belongs to a shared benefice with five neighbouring churches and is protected as a Grade I listed building.
The oldest fabric is the Norman tower, built around 1200, while its doorway survives from the twelfth century. A northern entrance and a font made from Purbeck marble were added in the thirteenth century. The chancel was constructed in the early fourteenth century, followed by the nave later in that century, and a fifteenth-century screen remains. Box pews installed in 1850 feature carved poppyhead decoration. The tower houses five bells dating from the late seventeenth century to 1923. Its present Gray and Davison organ was made in 1940 for a church in Chesham and transferred to Great Bircham around 1998.
