About Stornoway High Church

Stornoway High Church is a Presbyterian place of worship on Rathad MhicMhathain in Stornoway, Na h-Eileanan Siar. It belongs to the Church of Scotland and remains active, with 92 members recorded in 2024. Services are held for both English and Gaelic worshippers, using the original sanctuary and the New Hall respectively. The building has Category B listed status.

The congregation emerged after most branches of the Free Church and United Presbyterian traditions combined in 1900 to create the United Free Church. It had no permanent premises at first, but entered its newly completed home at the corner with Goathill Road on 1 August 1909. The church therefore marked its hundredth anniversary during 2009. Following another denominational union in 1929, it joined the established Church of Scotland and adopted its present identity. In 2013, a substantial group withdrew over the denomination’s approach to gay ministers and subsequently established Stornoway High Free Church.
