About Martin's Memorial Church, Francis Street, Stornoway, Lewis
Martin’s Memorial Church stands on Francis Street in Steòrnabhagh, on the Isle of Lewis in Na h-Eileanan Siar. It is recognised as a Category B listed building. The congregation has roots in the formation of the Free Church of Scotland following the religious division of 1843.
An English-speaking Free Church charge was approved in 1876, and land was bought at the junction of Francis Street and Kenneth Street. Robert Alexander Bryden of Glasgow designed the church, which was built largely by local contractors using red Torridon sandstone with contrasting pale stone details. Its foundation stone was placed in August 1877, and worship began in the completed building in October 1878. A spire, designed by Alex Macdonald, was added in 1911. The congregation adopted its present name in 1929 to commemorate its first minister, Donald John Martin. The current Harrison pipe organ was inaugurated in November 1949.
