About St Giles' Church of Scotland, High Street, Elgin
St Giles' Church of Scotland stands on the High Street in central Elgin, Moray. It is the town’s original parish church and remains part of the Church of Scotland. Its Category A designation dates from 1971.
A church at this site is first documented in a charter issued by William the Lion between 1187 and 1189, when it was granted to the Bishop of Moray. The ninth-century Elgin Pillar, found near the churchyard in 1823, may indicate an earlier place of worship. After Alexander Stewart, known as the Wolf of Badenoch, burned the medieval building in 1390, it was restored. The nave was reconstructed following the failure of its stone vault in 1679. Archibald Simpson designed the present Greek Revival building, which was erected from 1825 to 1828.
