About Spynie Cathedral
Spynie Cathedral stood near Spynie Palace in Elgin, Moray. Nothing visible survives of the church itself, although the graveyard remains. Two burial vaults now occupy the site, and a cross indicates where the east end once stood. Former Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald is buried in the graveyard.
The church originated in the twelfth century or perhaps earlier. It became the cathedral for Moray in 1207, but the diocesan seat transferred to Elgin in 1224. It continued as Spynie’s parish church until the eighteenth century, when a replacement was built at New Spynie using some stone from the older structure. A surviving Gothic gable collapsed in 1850. Foundations examined in 1924 showed a modest building measuring about 23 metres by 10.5 metres. Apart from the eastern gable, its simple structure was constructed mainly from clay.
