About Elgin Cathedral

Elgin Cathedral is a ruined medieval cathedral in Elgin, Moray, in north-east Scotland. Founded in 1224 on ground provided by Alexander II, it became the centre of the Moray bishopric after replacing Spynie Cathedral. Now a scheduled monument cared for by Historic Environment Scotland, the site preserves an important collection of medieval carved stone and a ninth-century Pictish cross-slab discovered nearby.

Once Scotland’s second-largest cathedral, the building was substantially reconstructed after a fire in 1270 and an attack ordered by Alexander Stewart, Earl of Buchan, in 1390. Its design included a twin-towered western façade, a large choir and presbytery, and an eight-sided chapter house. Decline followed the Reformation, when worship moved to St Giles and lead was stripped from the roof. The choir roof fell in 1637, while the central tower collapsed in 1711 and destroyed much of the nave. Conservation began during the early nineteenth century.
