About St Margaret's Episcopal Church and Burial Ground, Aberlour
St Margaret's Episcopal Church and Burial Ground stands in a secluded wooded setting in Dufftown, Moray. The Scottish Episcopal church remains in use for services each week and is protected as a Category A listed building. Its partly enclosed burial ground includes three foundation stones from the former Aberlour Orphanage and a memorial to orphanage boys killed in the two world wars.
Constructed between 1875 and 1879 to designs by Alexander Ross, the church originally served as the orphanage chapel. Most of the cost was met by Margaret Macpherson Grant, whose inherited wealth came from her uncle Alexander Grant, a Jamaica-based merchant, planter and slave owner. The Gothic building has a cross-shaped plan and is formed mainly from dressed pink granite rubble, with contrasting stone details. Notable elements include an octagonal spire, polished granite columns, carved stonework, decorative tiled floors and extensive stained glass showing saints and biblical subjects. The raised chancel retains richly worked furnishings and is divided from the nave by a metal rood screen.
