About Church of All Saints, Kemeys Commander

The Church of All Saints, Kemeys Commander is a Church of England parish church on Church Lane, near Usk in Monmouthshire. Its roots extend to the medieval period, and it is protected as a Grade II* listed building.

A church was recorded here during the 13th century, although the surviving structure largely dates to the 15th century. Kemeys Commander and nearby Kemeys Inferior once belonged to the Knights Templar, whose commandery gave the settlement its name. Built from limestone quarried locally, the church displays Perpendicular Gothic architecture. Entry is by a wooden porch beneath a bell gable, which now leans because the ground has subsided. A restoration was undertaken by Richard Creed towards the end of the 19th century. Inside, the medieval rood screen and its accompanying beam survive, a rare combination among churches in south-east Wales.
