About St Mary's Roman Catholic Church
St Mary's Roman Catholic Church stands on St Mary's Street in Monmouth, Monmouthshire. Serving the local Catholic parish, it is recognised as the first public Catholic place of worship authorised in Wales after the Reformation. The church has held Grade II listed status since 1974 and forms part of the Monmouth Heritage Trail.
Built in 1793, the earliest surviving section now contains the sanctuary and sacristy. The building was enlarged in 1837 and extensively remodelled by Benjamin Bucknall in 1871, when cottages concealing it from the street were removed. Bucknall added a tower and an ornate Old Red Sandstone façade, while a Georgian Gothic stained-glass window remains from the earlier church. Inside are a font showing the serpent from Eden, an altar associated with Saint John Kemble, a fourteenth-century processional cross and an embroidered chasuble dating to about 1502. A refurbishment took place in 2009 and 2010.
