About Monmouth Baptist Church
Monmouth Baptist Church stands on Monk Street in Monmouth, Monmouthshire. It is a Grade II listed place of worship, having received its designation in October 1998.
The Baptist congregation was established in 1818 following visits to the town by ministers from nearby affiliated churches. Its earliest home, close to Monnow Street, was expanded into a chapel in 1836 but later fell into disrepair and was demolished. Work on the present church began in 1906, with the building opening in 1907. Benjamin Lawrence, a Newport architect, designed it in a Victorian Gothic manner resembling his neighbouring Working Men’s Institute of 1867. Old Red Sandstone forms the main structure, complemented by Bath Stone details. Stained glass was installed in the entrance porch in 1964.
