About Glendower Street Congregational Church
Glendower Street Congregational Church stands in Monmouth, Monmouthshire. This Grade II* listed former chapel is now called Glendower House, taking its name from Owain Glyndŵr. After falling into an almost ruinous condition, it was adapted as a private home in 2002.
The town’s Congregational community had earlier met at Dixton Gate and Dyffryn House before settling in Glendower Street. Erected in 1843–44, the chapel was designed by Bristol architect William Armstrong as a smaller counterpart to his Brunswick Chapel. Its richly detailed Victorian architecture combines Classical and Italianate influences. The imposing front has a recessed middle section flanked by monumental Corinthian columns, while memorial stained glass was produced by Camm Brothers of Smethwick. Owner Anthony Sully planned the residential conversion, supported by a significant Cadw grant, and the completed project received an award from the Civic Trust for Wales in 2003–04.
