About Tabernacle Baptist Chapel
Tabernacle Baptist Chapel is a Baptist place of worship at Forest Coal Pit, near Abergavenny in Monmouthshire. The chapel and its adjoining manse retain much of their original character, both inside and out. The building is protected at Grade II*, reflecting its particular architectural and historic interest.
Built in 1837, the chapel records its date and builders on a tablet over the entrance gable. It is a modest, gabled structure made from rubble masonry of Old Red Sandstone and covered by a Welsh slate roof. Although the porch was added during the 20th century, the original doors survive. Inside, galleries extend around three sides of the chapel and rest on cast-iron columns. Long ranks of pegs for worshippers’ hats remain on both levels.
