St Marys Church stands on Church Road in Chepstow, Monmouthshire, and serves as a Church of England parish church. Formerly both a priory and parish church, it is now protected at Grade I for its exceptional historic and architectural interest.
Founded as a Benedictine house around 1072, the church retains significant Norman work. Its early fabric includes local yellow sandstone, substantial nave piers and a richly decorated western doorway featuring geometric carving. The building was altered repeatedly: the central tower fell during a storm in 1701, damaging the transepts, and a replacement tower was completed in 1706. Major rebuilding followed in 1841, while a later attempt to recover more of the nave’s Norman appearance continued between 1890 and 1913. Inside are Norman and 15th-century fonts, several historic tombs, and an organ containing pipes from the early 1600s. Eight tower bells were cast locally in 1735, with two further bells added in 1959.
