About Wallasey Memorial Unitarian Church
Wallasey Memorial Unitarian Church is situated in Liscard on the Wirral, Merseyside. Now without a resident congregation, the Grade II* listed church is maintained by the Historic Chapels Trust. It accommodates gatherings, displays and other functions, as well as occasional worship and Unitarian wedding ceremonies.
Edmund Waring and Edmund Rathbone designed the church, which was constructed in 1898–99 through the patronage of Martha Elam, a prosperous local Unitarian. Brick walls, masonry trim and tiled roofing form its Flemish Revival exterior, which deliberately lacks religious symbols. The interior contains an important Arts and Crafts scheme. Bernard Sleigh decorated panels on the choir seating, pulpit and communion table, while Benjamin Creswick produced carved figures and Walter Gilbert designed metal fittings and copper lectern panels. Harold Rathbone’s large ceramic reredos was made at the Della Robbia works in Birkenhead. Threatened with demolition after 1993, the building entered trust ownership in 1995 and opened again in 2002.
