About St Saviour's Church, Oxton
St Saviour’s Church, Oxton, is a Church of England parish church on Bidston Road in Wirral, Merseyside. It remains in active use within the Diocese of Chester, and its parish is joined with St Andrew’s, Noctorum. The church is protected as a Grade II* listed building.
Constructed from 1889 to 1892, it replaced a smaller church dating from 1846. C. W. Harvey, Pennington and Bridgen designed the red sandstone building, which has a Welsh slate roof and a cross-shaped layout in the Decorated Gothic style. Its prominent central tower was finished in 1892. Bombing in 1941 damaged the roof and eastern end, later reconstructed under Leonard Barnish with a simpler east wall. Notable interior features include an elaborate gilded oak reredos by G. F. Bodley, Arts and Crafts furnishings, and a 1920 war memorial by Giles Gilbert Scott. Stained glass includes designs by Edward Burne-Jones, while the church also has a four-manual organ and ten bells.
