About St Peter and Paul's Catholic Church
St Peter and Paul's Catholic Church is a Roman Catholic place of worship in New Brighton, Wirral, Merseyside. Designed by Ernest Bower Norris, it is protected as a Grade II listed building. The church remains open for worship, with Mass and other devotions held regularly.
Father Tom Mullins, an Irish priest educated for the priesthood in Lisbon, founded the church after serving at Hope Street on the Wirral. It was completed and opened in 1935, as New Brighton grew in popularity as a resort. Its distinctive green dome became known locally as the ‘Dome of Home’, since returning sailors used it as a sign that they were nearing Merseyside. After diocesan closure in 2008, worshippers temporarily moved to the nearby Anglican church of All Saints. Weekly Mass resumed in 2011, followed by a fuller reopening after the presbytery was renovated.
