About St Matthew's Church, Bromborough Pool
St Matthew’s Church is situated on York Street in Bromborough Pool, Wirral, Merseyside. Formerly used by an Anglican congregation, it ceased holding services in 2007. The church has been protected at Grade II since December 1986, reflecting its special architectural and historical significance. Proposals for bringing it back into religious use have since been developed.
Completed in 1890, the chapel was designed by Leach, a London architect, for employees of Price’s Patent Candle Company. It initially welcomed worshippers without affiliation to a particular denomination before becoming Anglican and serving under St Barnabas, Bromborough. Faced with rugged masonry and finer cut-stone details, the structure has a tile-covered roof. Its nave contains four bays, while the chancel has three; a porch lies to the south and a transept to the north. Lancet windows appear in groups of three or pairs. At the nave and transept junction, an eight-sided turret rises to a short slate spire crowned by an iron cross.
