About St James' Church, New Brighton
St James’ Church, New Brighton is an Anglican place of worship on Victoria Road in the Wirral town of New Brighton, Merseyside. It continues to serve as a parish church in the Diocese of Chester, with its benefice joined to Emmanuel in New Brighton. The building has Grade II listed status.
Designed by George Gilbert Scott, the church was erected during 1854–56 and opened for worship following consecration in July 1856. Stone walls, slate roofing and a cross-shaped ground plan define the exterior, while a spire crowns the four-level north-eastern tower. Internally, circular pillars support the arcades, and notable furnishings include a low metal screen and an eight-sided wooden pulpit ornamented with figures. A. O. Hemming produced the reredos in 1897, followed by painted decoration in the chancel in 1899. A south-side vestry by A. R. Keighley was completed in 1924, and a transferred organ arrived in 2006.
