About St Hildeburgh's Church, Hoylake
St Hildeburgh’s Church, Hoylake, is an active Church of England parish church on Stanley Road in Wirral, Merseyside. It belongs to the Diocese of Chester and serves the local community through varied forms of worship. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building.
Designed by Liverpool architect Edmund Kirby, the church was erected from 1897 to 1899 after Hoylake’s expanding population outgrew Holy Trinity Church. Lord Stanley provided the site. Built from red brick and terracotta beneath tiled roofs, it has a clerestoried nave of five bays, aisles, a chancel, south chapel and west baptistry. Inside are polished granite piers, an elaborately carved wooden pulpit and a timber reredos featuring a tiled and mosaic image of the Good Shepherd. Notable glass includes work by Powell’s, a 1919 window by Margaret Agnes Rope and an east window commemorating members of Royal Liverpool Golf Club who died in wartime.
