About St. Bartholomew's Church, Thurstaston
St. Bartholomew's Church, Thurstaston is an active Church of England parish church in Wirral, Merseyside. It belongs to the Diocese of Chester and is protected as a Grade II* listed building.
Christian worship on the site may date from the Anglo-Saxon period, with a church documented by about 1125. A Norman building was demolished in 1820 and replaced four years later; its tower survives nearby. The present red sandstone church, built in 1885 to designs by John Loughborough Pearson, was consecrated in 1886. Its tiled roof, three-bay nave and chancel are joined by a tower crowned with a broach spire. Interior details include an alabaster Resurrection reredos and pulpit, an onyx font, stained glass by Clayton and Bell, and family memorial tablets in white marble. The Norman Shaw organ case dates from 1905, while five of the six bells were cast in 1886.
