About Manor Church Centre, Egremont
Manor Church Centre, Egremont, is a former place of worship with an adjoining hall on Seabank Road in Egremont, Wirral. The congregation merged with St Andrew’s United Church, New Brighton, in 2010, after which the centre ceased operating. Both parts of the complex are protected together at Grade II.
Briggs, Wolstenholme & Thornely designed the church for Egremont’s Presbyterian community, with construction taking place during 1907 and 1908. It opened in 1908 and could hold 1,000 worshippers; the hall followed in 1910. The congregation became United Reformed in 1972 and adopted the Manor name following a Methodist union in 1994. Red sandstone quarried at Runcorn forms the walls, while slate covers the roof. Arts and Crafts influences combine with Gothic Revival details, including an 18-metre tower. Inside are a hammerbeam roof, a gallery, an eight-sided pulpit and stained glass by several prominent designers.
