About Hoylake Chapel
Hoylake Chapel stands on Station Road in Hoylake, on the Wirral in Merseyside. Originally established for Congregational worship, it was known as Hope Church Wirral and served an independent evangelical congregation by 2017. The church has Grade II listed status.
Built in 1905–06, the church was designed by the Chester architectural practice of Douglas and Minshull, which included John Douglas. Red brick walls are complemented by sandstone details and a slate roof. The layout includes an aisled nave, transepts, clerestory, eastern apse and south-west porch. A slender spire above the crossing was damaged during the Second World War and never reinstated. Inside are sandstone wall surfaces, a hammerbeam roof, marble flooring at the east end and furnishings by James Merritt. Stained glass from the 1920s includes work by H. G. Hiller and A. J. Davies. The three-manual organ was built by Hope-Jones and later modified by Norman and Beard.
