About Our Lady Star of the Sea and St Joseph's Parish
Our Lady Star of the Sea and St Joseph's Parish is an active Roman Catholic community in Wallasey, Merseyside, within the Diocese of Shrewsbury. The parish brings together Our Lady Star of the Sea in Seacombe and St Joseph’s in Wallasey. The Seacombe church is protected as a Grade II listed building.
The Catholic mission in Seacombe began in 1860, initially meeting in a room within a house. A school and chapel followed in 1862, while a later school also provided space for worship. Funded partly through a local legacy, the present church was designed by Edmund Kirby, begun in 1888 and opened in July 1889. Built from stone and roofed with slate, it has a clerestoried nave, aisles, a chapel and an apsidal chancel. Notable details include rose and lancet windows, a marble-panelled high altar and reredos dating from around 1900, and east-window glass commemorating local First World War dead. Bomb damage during the Second World War was minor, and later alterations included substantial reordering in 2006.
