About St Helen's Church, St Helens

St Helen’s Church, St Helens is a Church of England parish church in a prominent position within the Merseyside town. Also known as St Helens Minster, it remains in active use in the Diocese of Liverpool. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building.

A chapel dedicated to Saint Helen was recorded here in 1552 and gave the town its name. Enlarged in 1816 and rededicated to St Mary, that building was destroyed by fire in 1916. William Douglas Caroe designed its replacement, which was completed in 1926 and returned to the earlier dedication. Built of brick with red sandstone detailing and a slate roof, it combines Decorated and Perpendicular Gothic elements. Notable features include the north-east tower, richly carved screens and stalls, a wooden reredos with 25 figures, and the surviving font dated 1731. The church also contains memorial stained glass from 1927, a Harrison and Harrison organ installed in 1928, and ten bells cast during the 1830s.
