About Holy Cross & St. Helen

Holy Cross & St. Helen is a Roman Catholic parish church on Corporation Street in St Helens, Merseyside. It remains in active use under the care of the Archdiocese of Liverpool and has Grade II listed status. Access is available from Corporation Street and Parade Street, with level entry through an additional gate on the northern side.

The Jesuits established the church in 1860, when their British superior, Father Thomas Seed, placed its foundation stone on 3 May. Joseph John Scoles prepared the design, having also worked on Catholic churches in Preston, London and Liverpool. Construction took nearly two years, and the building opened on 1 May 1862. A stone memorial from 1933 records the transfer of responsibility from the Jesuits to the Archdiocese of Liverpool, which has administered the church since that time.
