About St Mary's Church, Little Crosby

St Mary’s Church, Little Crosby, stands on Back Lane in Little Crosby, within Sefton, Merseyside. It serves a Roman Catholic parish in the Diocese of Liverpool, with Mass and other worship held both during the week and on Sundays. The church remains in active use and has been protected at Grade II since 1996.

Built between 1845 and 1847, it was the work of architects Weightman and Hadfield, with construction financed by William Blundell of the local recusant Catholic family. The sandstone building has slate roofing and a restrained Decorated Gothic design influenced by Pugin. Its western steeple combines a buttressed tower of three stages with a broach spire. A transept-like southern chapel was added in 1883. Inside are octagonal arcade piers, a barrel-shaped timber roof, a monument depicting William Blundell, and painted decoration recalling the Blundell family. A six-stop nineteenth-century pipe organ, restored in 1990, stands by the western gallery.
