About St Luke's Church, Great Crosby
St Luke’s Church, Great Crosby is a Church of England place of worship on Liverpool Road in Great Crosby, within Sefton, Merseyside. The parish remains active as part of Liverpool Diocese. The building was added to England’s statutory heritage register at Grade II in 1996.
A. and G. Holme designed the church, which was constructed during 1853 and 1854 and consecrated by the Bishop of Chester in December 1853. Decorated Gothic in character, it uses roughly coursed sandstone with dressed stone details. Its layout includes a spacious nave without aisles, transepts, chancel and western tower and spire, reaching approximately 37 metres. A serious blaze damaged the eastern portion in 1972. Saunders Boston oversaw its reconstruction, introducing a steel-covered roof structure, replacement apse and three vestries with Modernist styling before the 1975 rededication. Other features include restored biblical glass, six bells dating from 1863 and a Walker organ installed during the 1970s.
