About St Joseph's Church, Birkdale
St Joseph's Church, Birkdale, is a Roman Catholic place of worship on York Road in Southport, within Sefton, Merseyside. It continues to serve its parish as part of Liverpool’s diocese. The building gained Grade II protection in 1999, and the connected presbytery is protected under its own Grade II designation.
E. W. Pugin drew up the plans for the church, which was erected between 1865 and 1867. A southern aisle followed in 1875. Its fabric combines red and blue brick, sandstone detailing and slate-covered roofs. The earlier work is Early English Gothic in character, while the aisle adopts Perpendicular Gothic features. Rose windows appear at both ends, with a small bell structure above the western gable. Inside are angel-carved supports, a painted rood, an intricately worked aisle altar and Victorian glass in the eastern window, possibly by Hardman. Ainscough of Preston made the two-manual pipe organ in 1875.
