About St John's Church, Birkdale
St John’s Church, Birkdale is situated on St John’s Road in the Southport district of Birkdale, within Sefton, Merseyside. This Church of England place of worship continues to serve its parish and belongs to the Diocese of Liverpool. Its architectural and historic importance is recognised through Grade II listing.
Construction took place in 1889–90 to plans by the Lancaster firm Paley, Austin and Paley. In 1909–10, Austin and Paley expanded the building with additional seating, a north-side aisle, arcading and vestry accommodation. The design combines Arts and Crafts influences with Gothic elements. Brick is complemented by terracotta, sandstone and timber details, beneath roofs of red tile. A western bellcote carries a short spire roofed in green slate. Within, uncovered brick surfaces meet sandstone supports and brick arching. Several makers are represented in the stained glass, while Rushworth and Dreaper of Liverpool produced the three-manual organ around 1893.
