About St Helen's Church, Sefton Village
St Helen’s Church stands in Sefton, Merseyside, and serves as an active Church of England parish church in the Diocese of Liverpool. It is designated Grade I, making it one of only two buildings with that status in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton.
The site was consecrated in 1170, with a private chapel established for the Molyneux family soon afterwards. The present structure retains a fourteenth-century tower and early masonry in the north aisle, while much of the church resulted from extensive Tudor rebuilding between about 1489 and 1587. Its Perpendicular design includes a clerestoried nave and chancel, side aisles, chapels and a two-level south porch. Seven elaborately carved sixteenth-century screens are particularly notable, alongside oak stalls and pews dating from around 1590. Windows in the south aisle contain surviving pieces of glass from before the Reformation. W. D. Caröe directed a substantial restoration from 1907 to 1922.
