About St George's Church, Southport

St George's Church, Southport stands on Lord Street in Sefton, Merseyside. It remains an active United Reformed church, holding services and group activities, as well as offering morning coffee to the public. The building has been protected at Grade II since 1972.

Designed by Thomas Wylie, the church was erected in 1873–74 for a Presbyterian congregation and altered by Irvine and Mosscrip in 1931. Built from rock-faced sandstone rubble beneath a slate roof, it reflects Gothic architecture of around 1300. Its five-bay nave is accompanied by a three-stage western tower, topped by a tall broach spire with two levels of lucarnes. Decorative details include buttresses, pinnacles, a pierced parapet and an ornate gabled porch. Inside, the single nave contains timber Gothic screens and stained glass by Heaton, Butler and Bayne and by Shrigley and Hunt.
