About St Benet's Chapel, Netherton
St Benet’s Chapel, Netherton, is a Roman Catholic chapel in Sefton, Merseyside. Together with its adjoining presbytery, it is protected as a Grade II* listed building and is regarded as a notable surviving early Catholic place of worship. Declared redundant in 1975, it returned to the care of the Archdiocese of Liverpool in 2026.
Built in 1793 after restrictions on public Catholic worship were eased, the chapel replaced a cottage and barn previously used by Benedictine priests. Its discreet arrangement placed the presbytery beside the road, concealing the chapel behind it. Both are built of brick with stone details. Notable features include round-arched sash windows, a cross-topped bellcote, a west gallery and an elaborate east wall with Corinthian pilasters. The marbled altar probably dates from the 1830s. The chapel underwent substantial restoration, while the presbytery was restored in 2004.
