About Parish Church of St Luke
The Parish Church of St Luke is an Anglican place of worship on Saint Lukes Church Road in Formby, Sefton, Merseyside. Serving as a parish church within Liverpool Diocese, it continues to hold services and mark baptisms, marriages and funerals. It has been protected at Grade II since 1966.
An earlier chapel was swept away by wind-blown sand in 1739. William Culshaw designed its successor, whose nave and porch opened in 1854; the crossing arms and sanctuary followed in 1897, with Culshaw and Sumners associated with the completed building. The exterior combines rugged stonework, smooth-cut detailing and slate-covered roofs. Features include a small bell housing above the western gable, geometric window tracery and a quatrefoil-opened parapet. Inside are a Romanesque baptismal font enriched with twisted moulding, Richard Formby’s fifteenth-century grave slab, and glazing with medical wording and images of plants found locally.
