About Old Christ Church, Waterloo
Old Christ Church, Waterloo is a former Anglican place of worship in Sefton, Merseyside. It has Grade II* listed status and is maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust. The church closed for regular worship in 1982, with its role passing to a newer Christ Church elsewhere in Waterloo.
Constructed from 1891 to 1899, it replaced an unsafe church dating from 1840. Sharpe, Paley and Austin designed the building, which uses red sandstone quarried at Bootle and green slate from Westmorland. Its predominantly Perpendicular Gothic design includes a five-bay nave, aisles, clerestory, chancel, chapel and a three-stage tower completed in 1899. Decorated Gothic tracery and Art Nouveau details also appear. A projecting polygonal baptistry stands beneath the large west window. Most fittings were removed after closure, although tiled chancel flooring and stained glass remain, including depictions of the Te Deum and the Twelve Apostles.
