About Holy Trinity Church

Holy Trinity Church is a Church of England parish church in Southport, within Sefton, Merseyside. It remains an active place of worship in the Diocese of Liverpool and is protected as a Grade II* listed building.

An earlier church opened on the site in the 1830s but eventually proved inadequate for its growing congregation. Huon Matear designed its replacement, which was built in stages from 1904. The main body was consecrated in 1912, with the tower completed the following year. Its freely interpreted Decorated Gothic design combines red brick with Bath and Portland stone, beneath a roof of green Westmorland slate. The 43-metre north-west tower has richly ornamented stone upper stages, clock faces, an open balcony and an octagonal crown. Inside are exposed brick walls, Runcorn stone columns and a pitch-pine roof. Many fittings came from the Bromsgrove Guild, including an intricately carved rood screen, while the 1921 reredos contains paintings by Sidney Meteyard and Walter Gilbert.
