About Saint Bartholomew's Church
Saint Bartholomew's Church is a Roman Catholic place of worship on Warrington Road in Prescot, Merseyside. It continues to serve as a parish church and is designated Grade II for its historic and architectural importance. A burial ground surrounds the building, while Rainhill Hall stands across the road.
Bartholomew Bretherton, a prominent local landowner and coach-business proprietor, established the church. Work took place from 1838 to 1840 using masonry sourced from a quarry owned by his family. Local architect Joshua Dawson based his plans on San Bartolomeo all’Isola, having travelled to Rome to examine that building. Mary Gerard, Bretherton’s daughter, placed the first stone in April 1838 and funded a memorial Lady Chapel in 1845. A bell tower with Italian architectural influences was erected in 1849. Later features included enclosing walls and a large sandstone gate. Bretherton, Mary and other family members were buried within the church.
