About Welsh Presbyterian Church
Welsh Presbyterian Church stands on Princes Road, Toxteth, in Liverpool, Merseyside. Formerly used by the Presbyterian Church of Wales, it is now disused and remains derelict. The building is protected at Grade II. Its prominent spire led to the informal names “Welsh Cathedral” and “Toxteth Cathedral”, although it has never held cathedral status.
Built from 1865 to 1867, the church was designed by Liverpool architects W. & G. Audsley in the High Victorian Gothic style. Rock-faced rubble walls and a decorative slate roof enclose a T-shaped arrangement of nave and transepts. The buttressed tower carries paired louvred openings, pinnacles and an arcaded broach spire with lucarnes. Rising to 200 feet, the steeple made it Liverpool’s tallest structure when completed. Interior galleries rest on marble piers, while wall piers support the nave’s barrel roof. Vacant since the 1990s, the building received initial lottery funding in 2019 for proposed conversion into a community hub.
