About Ullet Road Unitarian Church
Ullet Road Unitarian Church is an active Unitarian place of worship near Sefton Park in Liverpool, Merseyside. It belongs to the national body representing Unitarian and Free Christian congregations. The church and adjoining hall each hold Grade I listed status. It also became the first UK place of worship where a same-sex couple registered a civil partnership.
Its congregation traces its roots to Liverpool Presbyterians who began meeting in the late seventeenth century and later adopted Unitarian beliefs. Designed by Thomas and Percy Worthington, the present church was built in 1898 and opened the following year; the hall was completed in 1902. The building combines Gothic Revival design with Art Nouveau elements. Red Ruabon brick, sandstone detailing and Westmorland slate were used externally. Features include oak doors faced with worked copper, Morris & Co. glass created from Edward Burne-Jones designs, and an 1869 pipe organ brought from the congregation’s former Renshaw Street chapel.
