About Toxteth Unitarian Chapel
Toxteth Unitarian Chapel stands on Park Road in the Dingle area of Liverpool, Merseyside. Also called the Ancient Chapel of Toxteth since the 1830s, it remains a place of Unitarian worship, with services held fortnightly. Built in 1618, the chapel is protected at Grade I and belongs to the national body representing Unitarian and Free Christian congregations.
Richard Mather delivered his first sermon here in November 1618. The building was extended for Liverpool’s Dissenters in 1672, partially reconstructed in 1774 and given a porch in 1841. Constructed of stone beneath a slate covering, the church has two levels, arched windows and an octagonal cupola. Inside are galleries along three sides, enclosed pews, historic memorials and a Brindley & Foster organ dating from 1906. A plaque commemorates the astronomer Jeremiah Horrocks, a member of the congregation who accurately forecast a transit of Venus.
