About The Oratory
The Oratory is a Grade I listed former mortuary chapel in Liverpool, Merseyside, situated beside St James Cemetery and near Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. No longer used for its original purpose, it is cared for by National Museums Liverpool and displays nineteenth-century sculpture and funerary memorials associated with the Walker Art Gallery.
Built in 1829 to designs by John Foster, the chapel hosted services before interments in the neighbouring burial ground. Its design resembles a Greek Doric temple, with a six-columned portico at either end. The windowless interior receives daylight through the roof, while Ionic columns carry a coffered ceiling. The collection includes mainly Neoclassical reliefs, several rescued from buildings demolished during the 1980s, with works by sculptors including Francis Chantrey, John Gibson, Joseph Gott and Pietro Tenerani. Grade II listed iron railings and gate piers surround the building.
